If your laptop screen has cracked, is showing vertical lines, or has a black “ink bleed” patch, the LCD panel is usually damaged. The good news: in many cases, the screen can be replaced without affecting your files.

At Dreambytes we do proper screen replacements at our Cheadle Hulme workshop. We match the correct panel type (size, connector, resolution, slim/standard, touchscreen if applicable) and test thoroughly before return.

Quick reassurance: A screen replacement does not wipe your data. Your files live on the drive, not the display.

Common symptoms

  • Cracked or smashed screen
  • Vertical/horizontal lines
  • Black/purple “ink” patches
  • Flickering or dim display
  • White screen or partial image

Real laptop screen damage we repair

Below are genuine screen faults we see regularly — repaired in our workshop.

Laptop screen damage showing lines and ink bleed

Lines + ink bleed
Usually caused by impact/pressure damage to the LCD panel. Replacement is normally the correct fix.

Laptop screen with vertical lines requiring screen replacement

Vertical lines
Often indicates panel failure. If the laptop works on an external monitor, the motherboard/graphics are usually fine.

Laptop screen fully repaired and working normally

After screen replacement
Same laptop working normally again after the correct panel was fitted and tested.

Is it definitely the screen?

Most of the time, yes — but a proper diagnosis prevents wasted money. Screen faults can come from:

  • LCD panel damage (most common)
  • Display cable issues (less common)
  • Hinge strain causing repeated stress on the cable/panel
  • Backlight faults (dim image / torch test sometimes helps)

If you plug into an external monitor/TV and the image is perfect, that’s a strong indicator the laptop itself is fine and the issue is the screen assembly.

If you suspect stiff hinges or casing separation, also see: Laptop Hinge Repair.

Quick tip

Avoid pressing on the screen or closing the lid hard — cracks and ink bleed can spread.

FAQs

How much does it cost?

Most screen replacements fall between £80–£180 depending on the panel (size, resolution, touchscreen, slim type). You’ll get a quote before work starts.

How long does it take?

If the correct screen is available, repair is commonly 24–48 hours. Unusual or premium panels can take longer — we’ll confirm the timeline up front.

Will it fail again?

A new panel doesn’t “wear out”. Repeat issues are usually caused by fresh impact or hinge/casing strain. If we spot hinge stress we’ll flag it.
